Founded in 1905, Ancona are a small club who have only spent two years in Italy's top division. The last of these (in 2003-04) was disastrous as they finished the season bottom with just 13 points and bankrupt. Currently playing in Serie B they look a like possible promotion candidates so could have another taste of Serie A before long. Their main rivals are fellow Serie B team, Ascoli.

A smallish port in the Marche (Marches) region of Italy, Ancona has recently become a popular destination for British tourists taking advantage of budget flights from Ryanair. There's a historic town centre, and plenty of attractive countryside and coastal areas within easy reach.
